The GreenMan Story: Turning a Shared Vision into a Visionary Solution

How a Bench Sparked a Breakthrough

It all started with a birthday present.

One night, GreenMan co-founder Mike Greenwood was playing a game on his new virtual reality headset when he found himself riding on a trolley. Inside the trolley car, there was a bench. It was so real that without thinking, he started to sit down. In that moment, a question took hold: “If virtual reality can make a bench feel so real, could it help patients understand what their vision would be like after cataract surgery?”

A Chance Encounter.
A Shared Frustration.
A Big Idea.

Later, while on a work retreat with fellow ophthalmologists, Mike casually mentioned his idea to his colleague, Brandon Baartman. “What if we could use virtual reality technology to help our cataract patients better understand their future vision?”

“I’ve been thinking the same thing!

That’s how a partnership was born. Two cataract surgeons, equally passionate about patient education, realized they’d been wrestling with the same challenge: no matter how carefully they explained visual outcomes, words and brochures simply weren’t enough. Cataract patients nodded along but often walked away uncertain — and sometimes came back after surgery surprised or disappointed. They knew there had to be a better way. That conversation was the seed that ultimately formed GreenMan.

InsightVR: Where Understanding Meets Innovation

Both doctors knew that successful cataract surgery is about more than surgical precision – it’s about expectation alignment. The real measure of success is how well patient expectations are met. And that starts with understanding visual outcomes before surgery.

They knew there had to be a better way.

That’s why they created InSightVR – the first immersive educational platform designed specifically for cataract surgery education.

From Concept to Clinic

What started as a shared frustration between two ophthalmologists – GreenMan founders Michael Greenwood, M.D. and Brandon Baartman, M.D. – has become a cutting-edge tool that is elevating cataract consultations and helping patients turn abstract concepts into tangible expectations. By letting patients see their potential visual outcomes before surgery, InsightVR is closing the expectation gap and opening the door to more confident, more informed decisions.

Our Story Can Be Your Story Too - With Excellent Patient Results

We built InSightVR to bring clarity, confidence, and peace of mind to a moment that often feels stressful. Today, patients are telling us it’s making a real difference.

90% of patients say their post-surgery vision closely matches what they saw in VR.

93% of patients would recommend the VR experience to friends or family.

83.6% of patients find the headset easy and intuitive to use.

Better Education. Better Decisions. Better Outcomes.

When patients understand their options, they’re not only more satisfied – they’re empowered. They choose an IOL based on value, not just cost.

At GreenMan, we know that a better educated patient is a happier patient.
